The Royal Hospital in Oman has achieved a significant medical milestone by successfully performing the country’s first artificial heart implant using the advanced HeartMate 3 (HM3) device. This pioneering operation underscores the rapid development of Oman’s healthcare system and its commitment to adopting cutting-edge medical technologies.
The procedure involved implanting a partial artificial heart on the left side, designed to support the natural heart in pumping blood effectively, thereby improving patient vitality and quality of life. Dr. Waleed Al Badi, a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon, explained that the device assists the heart without replacing it, offering patients renewed energy and physical performance. Dr. Qasim Al Abri, another Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at the National Heart Center, highlighted the significance of this development, noting that it enhances the hospital’s cardiac surgical services. The procedure provides hope for patients suffering from severe heart failure, serving both as a bridge to potential heart transplants and as a long-term treatment for those ineligible for transplantation.
The HM3 device is among the most advanced cardiac support systems globally. Implanted in the chest, it aids the left ventricle in pumping blood to the body, helping patients regain essential bodily functions and independence. Equipped with magnetic levitation (MagLev) technology, the device minimizes internal friction, reducing risks of blood clots and bleeding, and ensuring long-term safety and stability. Its design includes a small internal pump connected to external controllers and portable batteries, allowing patients to maintain active lifestyles.
