The National Development Forum, held under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, focused on social development as a core pillar of Qatar National Vision 2030. The event featured prominent participation, including His Excellency Mr. Mansour bin Ebrahim Al Mahmoud, Minister of Public Health, who engaged in a panel discussion emphasizing the importance of a cohesive society with high-quality living standards.
Minister Al Mahmoud highlighted significant progress in Qatar’s healthcare sector, attributing advancements to strong leadership support. Qatar ranks first among Arab countries and 18th globally in healthcare quality, according to the Numbeo Index. Since implementing the National Health Strategies, key health indicators have improved markedly; life expectancy has increased from 74 to over 82 years, driven by a focus on preventive care, healthy lifestyles, and nutrition.
Infrastructure development is notable, with hospital capacity surpassing 5,000 beds and over 57,000 healthcare practitioners across public and private sectors. Primary health centers, ambulance services, and food safety systems—bolstered by internationally accredited laboratories—continue to enhance service quality. The Ministry emphasizes fostering private sector partnerships through regular forums and collaborative projects, with health insurance serving as a catalyst for private healthcare growth.
Qatar’s medical tourism is a strategic focus, leveraging specialized hospitals in sports medicine, pediatrics, cosmetic surgery, and wellness to position Qatar as a regional healthcare hub. Initiatives include launching medical visas in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior and Qatar Tourism.
The Minister also underscored efforts to strengthen family cohesion via home care services for seniors and disabled individuals, private nursing, and medication delivery. Despite progress, challenges persist, notably high patient volumes—about ten million annual visits—leading to long wait times. Measures like expanding clinics, operational efficiency improvements, evening clinics, and integrated healthcare services aim to mitigate these issues. The upcoming health insurance system is expected to further enhance access and reduce wait times. Ongoing efforts also target legal and data management challenges to support sector growth and service quality.
