The UAE commemorated World Diabetes Day on November 14, this year under the theme “Diabetes across life stages,” emphasizing a comprehensive national effort to combat the disease. The Ministry of Health and Prevention, along with various health authorities, reaffirmed their dedication to preventive strategies and early diagnosis to protect public health and foster a culture of prevention within a sustainable healthcare framework.

Senior officials highlighted the importance of integrated efforts in addressing diabetes. His Excellency Ahmed bin Ali Al Sayegh, Minister of Health and Prevention, underscored that tackling diabetes is a national priority supported by a unified approach. He emphasized that a proactive health system, underpinned by a national strategy, is essential to improve community health and quality of life. The expansion of smart diagnostic systems has been instrumental in enhancing screening efforts across diverse populations. He urged community members to participate in early screening to identify pre-diabetes, which is vital for effective prevention.

His Excellency Mansoor Ibrahim Al Mansoori, Chairman of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, pointed out that while diabetes remains a global challenge, its preventability—especially Type 2 diabetes—is significant due to its strong link to lifestyle. Abu Dhabi’s vision of a smart, proactive healthcare system aims to prevent chronic diseases before they develop. The Population Health Intelligence (PHI) platform, a data integration system that consolidates clinical, environmental, and lifestyle information, plays a key role in early intervention. This platform supports evidence-based decision-making and proactive programs like the “Check” screening initiative and personalized weight management support, which identify at-risk groups and promote healthy living.

Meanwhile, His Excellency Dr. Alawi Al Sheikh Ali, Director General of Dubai Health Authority, highlighted notable progress in combating diabetes through initiatives like the “Early Detection Healthcare Services for Emirati Citizens,” recently expanded by Dubai’s leadership. These efforts align with the strategic goal of reducing disease prevalence and encouraging healthy lifestyles through physical activity and sound nutrition. Dubai’s household health surveys revealed a decrease in diabetes prevalence from 13.7% in 2019 to 12.9% in 2024, alongside reductions in childhood obesity and increased physical activity levels.

Furthermore, Dr. Abdulaziz Al Muhairi, Chairman of the Sharjah Health Authority, stressed the importance of early detection and community engagement in preventing diabetes. Sharjah’s health system leverages advanced technologies and community initiatives to identify cases early, enabling prompt interventions. He called on residents to prioritize regular health check-ups and healthy behaviors to safeguard community health and ensure a healthier future.

Overall, the UAE’s multi-faceted approach—centered on prevention, early diagnosis, data-driven programs, and community participation—aims to curb the rising tide of diabetes and promote healthier lifestyles across all age groups.
